This episode takes place three weeks after Shelter Island – as expected, Ted and Stella didn’t tie the knot, but their breakup wasn’t mutual. Ted’s still hurting and has gone out of his way to avoid Stella, which is why the gang spends a significant portion of the episode hiding under a table at a restaurant after Stella walks in. Lily tries to convince Ted to stop avoiding Stella so that the whole situation can have some kind of resolution. Following from Lily’s reasoning, we hear each character talk about the last person they’d ever want to run into – Lily says she’d want to make things right with a kid she humiliated in high school. The last person Barney would ever want to see is a convicted felon named Becca, whom he used to see for conjugal visits before dumping her for a more attractive inmate.
The last person Robin would want to see walk into the restaurant? Her father, who wanted a boy so badly that when she was born a girl, he went right on acting like she was his son.
